Superstar Rajinikanth's property to be auctioned

Tamil superstar Rajinikanth's wife's 1.5 acre property is coming up for auction.  A possession notice issued by the  public sector Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) in a major national daily said the bank had indeed taken possession of the said property in Padapai, Kancheepuram district, nearly 80 km from Chennai.

The notice says Latha Rajinikanth, the superstar's wife, had stood guarantor for a loan to Mediaone Global Entertainment Ltd, which was now worth Rs.22.21 crore along with the interest due on it.

"This amount is due as on July 17, 2014 together with further interest and liquidated damages as per contractual rates and other expenses/costs thereon with effect from July 18, 2014 till payment within 60 days from the date of receipt of the said notice.  The borrower in particular and the public in general are hereby cautioned not to deal with the property/asset and any dealings with the property/asset will be subject to charges of Exim Bank for the amount outstanding as per its security documents, with further interest, costs, expenses and charges thereon with payment," the notice said.

Film industry sources said this was adding to the woes of Rajinikanth especially after the drubbing of his new film Linga at the box office. "Linga is a commercial failure.  Already distributors have upped their ante and some of them have started demanding compensation from Rajinikanth. A few among them have indeed planned to picket the superstar's residence demanding compensation. After Rajinikanth compensated several distributors in a situation like this 10 years ago when his film Baba flopped, the distributors tasted blood.  Now they want the superstar to repeat the same.  But I don't think Rajinikanth will yield this time," says a producer on condition of anonymity.

Other said the mistake lay on both sides, Latha Rajinikanth and Exim Bank. "Latha Rajinikanth should had known her obligations and so was the bank and I think both failed in their fiduciary responsibilities," says Shyam Sekar, an independent financial analyst who knows a thing or two about the film industry's money flow.  He said the trouble is probably a follow-up to Rajinikanth's last film Kochadaiiyaan  which was to a large extent linked with Mediaone Global Entertainment Ltd. It may be recalled that this is the first time that properties belonging to Rajinikanth are going to be auctioned.

In his nearly four decades in the film industry, Rajinikanth has been running into rough weather with bad and, troublingly, consistent patches over the last three years and more.  Rajinikanth's serious ailments in 2011 also added ruptures to his career graph.  "In 2011, he fell seriously ill and was taken to Singapore Mount Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.  He was there for a few months. Though he acted in two films after that, he has not fully recovered yet," says an industry watcher. Two consecutive flops are posing a serious and strong question mark over the future of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth.

'Khamoshiyan' similar to 1949 film 'Mahal': Gurmeet Choudhary

'Khamoshiyan' similar to 1949 film 'Mahal': Gurmeet Choudhary
Mumbai: Television fame Gurmeet Choudhary, who recently stepped into Bollywood with a romantic flick ‘Khamoshiyan’, says that the film is almost similar to the 1949 hit film ‘Mahal’.

The hit suspense thriller ‘Mahal’ which casted Ashok Kumar and Madhubala in the lead roles became one of the box office hits of 1949.

“It is somewhat similar to the film ‘Mahal’,” Gurmeet said on Monday at FHM Bachelor of the Year Awards ceremony.

Not revealing much about the film ‘Khamoshiyan’, Gurmeet said, “It is a mix of many elements. But the film is very interesting where you will get a lot of stuff worth watching. It has beautiful songs, drama, suspense, everything…”

Also featuring Ali Fazal and Sapna Pabbi, the film ‘Khamosiyan’ is slated for Jan 30 release.

Alia Bhatt’, Sunny Leone, Kangana Ranaut: Top heroines at box office with powerful roles in Bollywood

In a year when money ruled the marquee with big stars opting for blockbusters, some remarkably content-driven women-centric movies made a big splash in Bollywood, among them Alia Bhatt, Sunny Leone, Kangana Ranaut…
Erotic-horror 'Ragini MMS 2' with Sunny Leone in the lead role was one of the most successful women-led horror films of the year spinning more than Rs 46 crore at the box office.
According to Google India's annual 'Year in Search' (YIS), Sunny Leone continued to be the most searched personality among the top searched people.

In a year when money ruled the marquee with big stars opting for blockbusters, some remarkably content-driven women-centric movies made a big splash in Bollywood, among them Alia Bhatt, Sunny Leone, Kangana Ranaut. Unlike the over-hyped star-studded films tailor-made to pull more audience to theatres, these films balanced their ‘masala’ quotient with good content.
2014 broke new grounds by giving heroines the required push to embrace scripts revolving around female protagonists.
Erotic-horror ‘Ragini MMS 2′ with Sunny Leone in the lead role was one of the most successful women-led horror films of the year spinning more than Rs 46 crore at the box office.
Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Highway’, a visual treat cataloguing the landscapes of Northern India, in the backdrop of a kidnap drama involving the young daughter of a rich man, who finds freedom in her captivity. This nuanced film, chronicling the inner journey and anguish of the captor and the hostage, turned out to be Alia Bhatt’s most mature performance till date.
In March came Vikas Bahl’s ‘Queen’, a heart-warming and disarming journey of a naive Rajouri girl Rani (played by Kangana Ranaut to perfection), who embarks on a solo honeymoon after being dumped by her fiance.
The film took the industry by surprise with its solidly-written role for Kangana, coupled with first-rate performances by Lisa Haydon and Rajkummar Rao.
‘Queen’, which premiered at Busan International Film festival, grossed Rs 61 crore at box office, a rare feat achieved by small-budget movie with a woman in the lead.
This was followed by Madhuri-Juhi Chawla starrer ‘Gulab Gang’ (released on March 8). The film revolved around an all-female vigilante group led by activist Sampat Pal in Bundelkhand (UP) but it was not exactly a box office success.
In August, came Rani Mukherjee starrer ‘Mardaani’ which broke into the male bastion touching on the ugly world of child trafficking.
Rani played a tough cop chasing a sex trade kingpin in the hard-hitting film, which was praised for its tight and compelling narrative. Her performance as a no-nonsense Mumbai crime branch officer lent strength to her character.
A month later, another film which celebrated woman power was Omung Kumar’s inspiring biopic on five-time female World Boxing champion Mary Kom with Priyanka Chopra in the lead.
Not only was Chopra’s powerhouse performance as the Olympic boxer appreciated by critics and audience alike, the film did a good job at the ticket windows too.
Vidya Balan-starrer ‘Bobby Jasoos’ did decent business at the box office. The film was praised for the sincerity of Balan’s performance as a naive but ambitious detective in the making in Hyderabad.
The year came to an end with much-talked about Sonam Kapoor-Fawad Khan starrer ‘Khoobsoorat’, which did decent business at the box office. In a role reversal of the sorts, Pakistani actor Fawad Khan emerged as the new eye candy with his female fans flocking to theatres for this romantic comedy.
