The Best Actresses in Hindi cinema, 2014,Maharashtra CM says no probe; PK film shows to continue

Maharashtra CM says no probe; PK film shows to continue

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ruled out any probe into Aamir Khan starrer PK, a day after the Ministry of State for Home Affairs ordered an inquiry into the film's 'content' amidst raging protests, and promised adequate protection for its smooth screening.

"There will be no inquiry. Shows of PK will continue all over Maharashtra and we will provide necessary protection to ensure smooth screening of the film," he told reporters.

Amid protests by right-wing groups like Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad demanding a ban on the movie, which takes a swipe at Hindu gods, godmen and superstition, Maharashtra's Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde had said that he had asked police to probe the contents of the film.

    Should PK be banned? VOTE!

With protests spreading to several states, the film's director Rajkumar Hirani had said that he had no intention of hurting anyone's sentiments and maintained that the film upholds the true spirit of religion while condemning 'only the abuse' of it.

"I'm deeply saddened and concerned about the protests by some groups against our film PK. On behalf of the entire team of PK, I would like to clarify that we respect all religions and faiths," the 52-year-old celebrated film director had said, in a statement.

Shinde had asked IG (Law and Order) Deven Bharti to look into objectionable scenes, if any, in the film and promised 'necessary' action if any 'wrong' was found.

"The Censor board may have found the film fit to be released and hence they cleared it from their end. But after the release, some organisations have objected to some parts of the film," Shinde had said, adding the government will "step in" if the issue snowballed into a major law and order

problem.

The film has the right-wing Hindu groups up in arms, staging protests that have turned violent in some places including BJP-ruled Gujarat where theatres have been vandalised. Protests have also taken place in several states including Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Haryana and Delhi,

besides Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Leela Samson, chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification, has made it clear that the board will not remove any scenes from the film.

Aamir has also trashed accusations of him having 'insulted' the Hindu religion because he was a Muslim, saying, "We respect all religions. All my Hindu friends have seen the film and they have not felt the same."

Clarifications from Hirani and Aamir Khan have, however, cut no ice with the agitators.

The Best Actresses in Hindi cinema, 2014

It is truly a thrilling and liberating time to be an (established) actress in Hindi cinema, a time when risks are smiled upon and when roles are pushing various envelopes.

The 10 women singled out for applause this year have played characters that include a cop, a lesbian, a hostage, a tourist and a boxer -- what an amazing range, and those are just the labels.

The true magic lay in richly textured and well-etched characters they created.

Here, then, are the 10 terrific ladies leading the class of 2014:

10. Priyanka Chopra in Mary Kom

Priyanka Chopra and Sunil Thapa in Mary Kom
Image: Priyanka Chopra in Mary Kom
Omung Kumar’s Mary Kom is an abysmal excuse for a film, one of the worst biopics I’ve ever had the misfortune to sit through. But leading lady Priyanka Chopra worked her derriere off for the part, and it shows.

Prosthetic debates aside, Chopra puts in a plucky, emphatic performance as the already-legendary boxer, playing her with a committed bravado.

9. Seema Pahwa in Ankhon Dekhi

Image: Sanjay Mishra and Seema Pahwa in Ankhon Dekhi
Rajat Kapoor’s slice-of-life fable about a lower-middle-class Delhi family centres around the patriarch caught in introspection and whimsy, but the glue holding the family together is the beleaguered wife and mother, played by Pahwa.

Nagging, miserable and often exasperatedly talking to herself, Pahwa nevertheless conjures up a mother character we recognise -- and one who, when asked point blank by her increasingly eccentric husband if she thinks he’s going mad, is loving enough (and resigned enough?) to assure him he isn’t.

8. Sonam Kapoor in Khubsoorat

Image: Sonam Kapoor in Khubsoorat
Remaking a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film was always going to be an uphill task, but director Shashanka Ghosh avoided all comparison by turning his update into a glossily Disneyfied confection, with Kapoor as its ideal candified centre.

Channelling her inner Emma Stone, Sonam delivers a breezy and energetic performance that is klutzy, refreshingly free of vanity, and full of gif-worthy faces.

7. Rani Mukherji in Mardaani

Image: Rani Mukherji in Mardaani
Rani is scary in Pradeep Sarkar’s Mardaani -- and I don’t mean her hefty, unflattering look.

Cops are often called tough as nails, but Mukherji exemplifies it with a hardline, no-nonsense performance that provides a spine to an otherwise feeble film.

Sure, the film is a showcase for the actress, but when she is this effective -- closer to the intensity of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s cop in Kahaani than to the cartoonish bravado of Salman Khan’s cop in Dabangg -- that’s not a bad thing at all.

6. Deepika Padukone in Finding Fanny

Image: Deepika Padukone in Finding Fanny
We’ve always had a problem with actors trying to emote in English, mostly coming off as overdone or badly accented or merely, tragically unnatural.

Padukone, however, is stunningly candid in Homi Adajania’s film, serving as narrator and muse and resident stunner but doing it all with a merrily light touch.

It’s a strongly believable performance -- she’s restrained even when jumping a guy -- and this kind of easy candour is rare in our cinema.

5. Alia Bhatt in Highway

Image: Alia Bhatt in Highway
A sheltered girl kidnapped the night before her wedding, Veera Tripathi has no business pluckily falling in love with her dour abductor.

And yet she does.

She confides in him, sings to him, provokes him, and -- atypical even to Stockholm Syndrome -- begins to mother him while envisioning a future together.

It is all beautiful to look at but decidedly deranged, and Bhatt shines effervescently and credibly in the demandingly odd part.

4. Tejaswini Kolhapure in Ugly

Image: Tejaswini Kolhapure in Ugly
Shalini Bose doesn’t care.

About her ex-husband.

About her current husband.

About what whiskey is filling her glass. About what the domestic help might think of her outbursts.

About how she looks. About how she’ll get through tomorrow.

About her daughter.
Everything is a burden to this miserable character, and Tejaswini Kolhapure, shrouded in fatigue, ekes out a performance through silences, small but telling gestures and sad, sad eyes.

Once upon a time when trying on a red dress for a stranger, those eyes could manage a sporadic sparkle but by now they’ve glazed over.

Apathy this absolute has to be this haunting -- or so we may only imagine.

3. Madhuri Dixit in Dedh Ishqiya

Image: Madhuri Dixit in Dedh Ishqiya
It’s all about the words with Begum Para, be they the words of besotted poets vying to win her beautiful hand, or the strategically-plucked words from handmaidens who know better.

Dixit, as the imperious Begum with a mischievous smile, impressively enunciates her finely chosen words with appropriately italic lilts, but -- even better -- reacts with glorious grace to the words surrounding her, no matter what is said.

This is an elegant, un-showy performance made up of precise, subtle tonal shifts, and it is a treat to watch Dixit dazzle like only she can.

2. Kangna Ranaut in Queen

Image: Kangna Ranaut in Queen
In any other year, Ranaut would be champion.

Carrying off Queen, directed by Vikas Bahl, is no small feat, for the entire film rests definitively on the shoulders of one actress.

Ranaut, playing the simple Delhi lass Rani Mehra, excellently -- and seemingly effortlessly -- captivates us from the start as she hungers for the right selfies and sangeet steps.

She comes so close to the audience that we can almost hear her heart break, and we’re curiously perched on her shoulder as she decides to fly solo for her honeymoon.

And then someone tries to pinch her bag.

This is the moment that Rani and Ranaut dig their heels in and hold on tight, throwing out hysterics in hyper-real fashion and making sure she’s won us all over, this gritty girl who refuses to fade.

Ranaut, who has written her own dialogue in the film, fashions a character with undying spirit and verve -- who also, as it happens, is most unlikely to be able to spell verve.

Or even say it right.

The way she says “hawwwww,” the thrill she finds in a lassi drinking competition, the infectious twinkle in her widened eyes when telling a “non-veg” joke, her brilliant unselfconsciousness... Nobody enchanted us like Rani, and there’s never been a character like her.

As said, in any other year... But sometimes a character we know -- or think we know -- can be even better.

1. Tabu in Haider

Image: Tabu in Haider
She’s all about family.

Her husband, a noble doctor, constantly imperils their very existence, and we come across her teaching a classroomful of children to parrot the definition of a perfect home, in perfect unison.

Ghazala Meer is Shakespeare’s Gertrude but armed with Indian-mother possessiveness, a woman who rushes onto a cricket field and points a gun at her own head to banish her boy, to keep him from mixing with militants.

Many years later, walking through a field, mother and son discuss that memory strung violently high.

He accuses her of bluffing, and it is at this point that Tabu -- so far luminous, emotional, inscrutable, all arrows we know well from the formidable quiver of her filmography -- smiles a heartbreakingly wry smile, the smile of a mother who knows so much more.

And, equally, of a woman who wistfully, earnestly, longingly wishes she didn’t know better.

As lover and as liar, Tabu is sensational in Haider.

She screeches, she sobs, she succumbs -- all with a miraculous consistency, elaborately crafting one of Hindi cinema’s most memorable characters.

It is the kind of performance that reveals more magic with each viewing, one that embeds itself in audience memory and one that, standing as it is boldly left of centre, becomes the heart of the film.

And throbs so damn strongly it changes the beats set by the Bard.

In other words, the mother of all performances.

Kangana Ranaut's relationship status is committed!

Kangana Ranaut's relationship status is committed!
Mumbai: By the end of 2014, Bollywood's Queen Kangana Ranaut clears her relationship tag and surprised her millions of fans. Revealing that she is in a commitment, Kangana kept the name of her Mr. X under wraps.

However, as soon as the news found its way out to the public, people started speculating about Kangana's man.

Well, as per one of the latest rumor, which spread like wildfire, we acknowledged that may be its Hrithik Roshan who is dating this gorgeous lady- but that’s just the rumor after all.

In a recent interview, she said that relationships are difficult and taking names would be unfair to the other person.

Hrithik, on the other hand, had brushed off the rumors regarding the matter sometime back on Twitter.

While there are no confirmations from either side, it remains to be seen if there is any truth to the rumors.

After Polio, Big B wants to start cure Hepatitis B campaign

Mumbai: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan wishes to use his stardom to eradicate more social issues and the latest in those lines are the plans to start a new campaign for infectious disease caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV).
Reuters

The 72-year-old, who has been associated with Unicef as a Global Ambassador for polio eradication since 2005, took his concern for the disease to social media Monday, saying that he met doctors recently to plan strategies to cure it.
“Wish to start a campaign on awareness of Hepatitis B... Met some committed doctors and shall strategise... Detect and cured asap!," Big B tweeted.
He will next be seen in “Shamitabh”, which is being directed by R. Balki. The film also stars Dhanush and debutante actress Akshara Haasan in pivotal roles. The film is expected to release 6 Feb.

Archana in Balakrishna-Trisha's film?
Trisha, Radhika Apte in lead roles. Apparently, Archana will be seen in an important character in the film and recently, her portions were shot near Hyderabad. The actress' last noticeable film was Kamala Tho Naa Prayanam, in which she had played the role of a prostitute, whereas her recent film Panchami sank without a trace at the box-office.

Kareena Kapoor Khan to do an item number in Akshay Kumar's 'Brothers'!

Kareena Kapoor Khan to do an item number in Akshay Kumar's 'Brothers'!
Mumbai: Despite being amongst the top notch actresses of the industry, Kareena Kapoor Khan apparently never misses out on a chance of giving her fans a delight for eyes with her special numbers if few Bollywood projects. Once again, the actress has reportedly been signed to do an item number in upcoming flick ‘Brothers’.

The actress has been widely known for his outstanding performances in several dance numbers and the upcoming song is going to be another addition to the long list.

She has been seen in some of the biggest hit item songs of the industry. Be it her ‘Fevicol’ song from Salman Khan starrer ‘Dabangg 2’, or Marjaani from Shahrukh Khan starrer Billu, all have been super-duper hits.

The actress first appeared in an item song back in 2007 when she returned to the big screen after losing a lot of weight for Tusshar Kapoor starrer ‘Kya Love Story Hai’ in 2007. After that in 2009, she was approached to groove with SRK in Billu which had few more item songs. The song garnered lost of popularity and is still popular amongst the audiences.

In 2012, the actress starred in three back to back item numbers and each of them became big hits. The three songs were ‘Fevicol’ from Dabangg 2, ‘Halkat Jawani’ from her own flick Heroine and ‘Chinta Ta’ from Akshay Kumar starrer Rowdy Rathore. She rocked in every song and her looks and moves were also praised by the viewers.

Since then she has only appeared in the multi-starrer special number in Apna Bombay Talkies songs from the movie Bombay Talkies which released in 2013 to celebrate the 100 years of Indian cinema.

So, this is going to be a visual delight for all Kareena Kapoor Khan fans to see her in yet another sensuous and seductive avatar in Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra starrer upcoming flick ‘Brothers’.

The film, which is being directed by Karan Malhotra, is scheduled to release on July 31, 2015.

However, Kareena Kapoor Khan is currently busy filming for her upcoming flick ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ where she will be seen romancing Salman Khan. It will also hit the silver screens on July 16, 2015.

Ranbir Kapoor was Anurag Kashyap's last choice for 'Bombay Velvet'!

Ranbir Kapoor was Anurag Kashyap's last choice for 'Bombay Velvet'! Mumbai: Anurag Kashyap directorial flick Bombay Velvet, an adaptation of ace author Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables', is now running under post production. Revealing about the flick, director says that actor Ranbir Kapoor was not his first choice and he always wanted to cast biggies like Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan or Saif Ali Khan.

Anurag was of a belief that casting anyone from the two Khans or Hrithik would help the film mint more over the box office.

“‘Bombay Velvet' was expensive from the beginning. It is the most tight budget film of my career. It is a Rs 300 crore movie that we have made into Rs 90 crore. I wanted someone who was not only a good actor but also made it possible for me to raise that kind of money," Anurag told.

“My first choice when I wrote the film in 2006 was Saif Ali Khan. From there it went to Aamir and Hrithik. This film has gone around before landing with Ranbir. We also tried to make it with Ranbir Singh but we could raise only Rs 40 to 50 crore," he added.

Film will also star noted filmmaker, director Karan Johar in a completely new avatar.

“Karan will surprise everyone as there is no trace of Karan in his performance,” he quoted.

Mr. Kashyap believes that when directors don the acting cap, it is like icing on the cake. He said, "I feel directors make great actors. A director is the only guy who does not come asking for instructions as he knows where the camera is and what he is supposed to do.”

Meanwhile, ‘Bombay Velvet’, which chronicles the story of how a city became a metropolis, also features actress Anushka Sharma in the lead role.

Film is slated for May 2015 release.

Aambala' Music Review: High Energetic Music from Hip Hop Tamizha [AUDIO],Will release film abroad if government denies certificate: Imran Zahid

Will release film abroad if government denies certificate: Imran Zahid

Will release film abroad if government denies certificate: Imran Zahid
Imran Zahid

First helming Arth and Daddy's stage avatar earlier this year to bagging the lead role in Janam's remake, 2014 proved to be quite an interesting year for Imran Zahid. The Bokaro lad was in Ranchi on Tuesday on his way back to Delhi after a brief visit to his hometown. Despite his hectic schedule, the actor visited Ranchi Times office and talked about his upcoming projects. Excerpts:

2014 turned out to be quite a happening year for you...

Yeah! By god's grace, Daddy's theatrical adaptation was a huge success. Mahesh Bhatt saab and Puja Bhatt, both appreciated the play. Then Zakhm's adaptation is on the cards as well as Janam's remake. It has been a good year for me, proving my conviction into the path I have taken.

Going by your choice of plays and movies so far, are you averse to doing more commercial kind of cinema?

When I set out on this journey, I had made some rules for myself. The first one was that I would work in lead roles only; and the second one was that I will only work in meaningful cinema. I have always been this way and that is, perhaps the reason why I chose to make Delhi my base. Even in theatre, I have seen the vast difference between the Delhi and Mumbai circuit. Whereas the theatre circuit in Mumbai is commercially driven, with tickets costing as much as Rs 5,000 - 10,000, Delhi has mostly remained a hub for activists. Even veterans like Arvind Gaur have to fund the shows out of their own pockets, leave alone earning any profits out of it. Despite all that, I still feel at home and quite content in what I'm doing at the moment.

You seem to share great rapport with Mahesh Bhatt. Are you averse to the idea of working with other production houses?

It was Bhatt saab who brought me into the industry and hence I owe him a lot. Apart from that, he also trusted me with the theatrical adaptations of his landmark movies. Also, since I have not shifted to Mumbai, the idea of working with other banners doesn't arise.

So is it important to have a godfather in the industry to achieve success?

As per my reading of the working style of Bollywood, I believe that the industry still doesn't accept outsiders easily. If one will see the list of lead actors or actresses who had their debut in the past five years, you'll see that they already had some sort of connection to the industry and were easily accepted by the producers and directors. This is also because of the investment required and keeps the brand value of a particular family intact. Keeping that in mind, having a godfather is always desirable.

You have chosen to make a movie on Tibetan issue.

Having lived in Delhi as a student, I had the chance to closely observe the Tibetan movement and I understand how important it is . It's an existential crisis for them and I was appalled by the way censor had blurred the Tibetan flag in the song from Rockstar. It was then that I had decided to make a movie on the Tibetan issue. I can't understand that If you can make movies on Pakistan, Kashmir and even the anti Sikh riots, why is Tibet being kept out of bounds? Almost two generations of Tibetans have lived in our country and become a part of a composite culture. Now that things are rolling again, we hope to go on floor by January next year.

Aren't you scared of running into trouble with censor board, given what happened in Rockstar episode?

I'll not be bogged down by these issues. The story of Tibetans living in India needs to be told and with the kind of support I have been getting from all over the world, I will definitely go ahead with it. If the government stops me by refusing certification, I will release the film abroad.

You have a long standing association with theatre. Any plans to bring your plays to Ranchi?

We had tried contacting the cultural secretary, Government of Jharkhand to provide us a place to stage the show, which we would have done for free but they never replied. Even Bhatt saab is very keen to stage the play in Jharkhand. As soon as someone provides us with a place, we will bring Daddy to Ranchi.

Aambala' Music Review: High Energetic Music from Hip Hop Tamizha [AUDIO]

The music of the much awaited movie "Aambala" has been released. The audio launch function of the movie was held in Chennai and was attended by many including the cast and crew of the film.

Aambala posterTwiiter/ Vishal film Factory
The music of the movie composed by Hip Hop Tamizha has opened to positive reviews and most of the critics felt that the songs are highly energetic, which are mixed with some heavy beats.
The songs of the movie are sung by Kailash Kher, Maria Roe Vincent, Vishnu Priya, Hip Hop Tamizha, Amritha Shekar, Mohit Chauhan, Anthony Dassam, Kutle Khan and Varun and the lyrics are written by Hip Hop Tamizha.
The film, which stars Vishal and Hansika in the lead, is directed by Sundar C.  The movie also has star cast of Vaibhav Reddy, Santhanam, Sathish, Madhuurima, Madhavi Latha, Ramya Krishnan, Kiran Rathod, Aishwarya, Rajeev Govinda Pillai, Vichu Vishwanath, Kanal Kannan and Andrea Jeremiah in guest appearance
"Aambala" is jointly produced by Kushboo Sundar and Vishal.
"Madras To Madurai", Singers: Kailash Kher, Maria Roe Vincent, Vishnu Priya, Lyrics: Hip Hop Tamizha
"House mix and kuthu- that's Madras to Madurai for you. Bringing back Kailash Kher is a delight for fans. The over-powering music, hardly heard lyrical portions and jarring beats make it a prototype folk sing." – Behindwoods
"Aadhi regains the momentum with this number as he allows his lead singers to take the front seat. Kailash Kher's rendering is funky and Vishnu Priya gels really with him to spark a festival atmosphere right from the word go. Aadhi has put his innovation on display by fusioning folk with DJ theme; an experiment, which is sure to earn laurels for him."- Indiaglitz
"Dynamic vigor, foot tapping interludes and a sprightly rendition from the trio make this a merry number to start the album with. Except for the monotonic tune, everything goes well with the track and it has enough to make you tap-dance"- OnlyKollywood
"Pazhagikalaam", Singers: Hip Hop Tamizha, Lyrics: Hip Hop Tamizha
"Pick of the album, Pazhagikalam is addictive and vivacious. Party mix and Aadhi's lyrics do all the magic. A simple tune and interesting lyrics can provide a good song. This track is one such example where people would love to participate. A genuine hit number."- Behindwoods
"Aadhi dishes a kick ass dance number to start the album. 'Pazhagikalam' is delivered right from the bottom of his heart. Aadhi, a rapper, who has done wonders with Anirudh and rocked the internet with his independent albums has made a giant stride as a composer and hit the bulls eye in his first attempt. The track is not something unique, but it does carry its quotient of freshness and it is destined to hit the charts. Audio has stuck with the 3.5-4 min rule and composed a foot tapping material." – Indiaglitz
"The bang – up energy of Hip – hop Tamizha is an absolute delight to lend your ears to. Hwavy EDM Entr'actes, butt kicking rhymes and the nonchalant lyrics construct and enjoyable number in 'Pazhagikalam'. OUR PICK!" - OnlyKollywoods
"Vaa Vaa Vaa Vannila", Singers: Amrita Shekar, Mohit Chauhan, Lyrics: Hip Hop Tamizha
"Mohit's unique voice and the grand piano give a soft, blues type song. The guitar solo in the first BGM is ambitious. Female vocals are noteworthy. This track is bound to grow in you. A non-formulaic and an appealing effort." – Behindwoods
"Well, here comes the ultimate surprise from the composer. If you go song by song, you wouldn't guess something like this after the first three songs and that's where it stands out. Mohit Chauhan carves his name all over this soft rock number; consisting steady drum beats in the first half and a dreamy electronic guitar which open the doors to Amrita's arrival."- Indiaglitz
"An ingenious, avant-garde tune with impressive arrangement of sounds, Browbeating piano, consistently thrumming beats in the background and the subtle, laid – back rendition of Amrita and Mohit make this a sparkling track. OUR PICK!" – Onlykollywood
"Yaarenna Sonnalum", Singers: Anthony Dassan, Kutle Khan, Varun, Lyrics: Hip Hop Tamizha
"The fearsome Anthony, jazzy Varun and mighty Kutle Khan provide a variety of genre' specific voices. The timpani in the background, string sessions and powerful singing give a melodious song. The uncomplicated interludes are a minus. Sounds original and pure. "- Behindwoods
"Kutle Khan's vocals hasn't done enough justice to the pathos and the instruments dominates the lyrics. It would have sounded much better, if the composer had made some alterations to the sound arrangements. However, Anthony Dassan got the much needed break in terms of a different genre than his regular folk singing."- Indiaglitz
"Another stirring confection of sounds spearheaded by Kutle Khans's outlandish vocals. The pounding drumbeats create a perfect atmosphere for the song. OUR PICK!"- Onlykollywood
"Aye Aye Aye", Singers: Hip Hop Tamizha, Lyrics: Hip Hop Tamizha
"The mystic accordion, lively acoustic guitar strumming, Aadhi's inhibition-less voice and the brass sections give a peppy, tango like song. The lyrical rhyme scheme seems to effortlessly gel with the song. The typical rap portion is Aadhi's signature. Colorful visuals and competent dance choreography can highlight the song better." –Behindwoods
"Aadhi makes use of his main weapon to serve the second track, a racy rap comprising various instruments. However, the track fall shot and doesn't inject the enthusiasm compared to the earlier song. The songs might go well with the visuals to occupy the charts after the release of the movie." – Indiaglitz
"Lively breakbeats and Hiphop Tamizha's vivacious vocals give an exotic flavour to the song. A passable track, thanks to the standardized dulcet sounds of 'Pazhagikalam' sneaking softly in the background."- Onlykollywood
"Inbam Pongum Vennila", Singers: Hip Hop Tamizha, Lyrics: Hip Hop Tamizha
"Almost a remake of the yesteryear classic 'Inbam pongum vennila' song, this Aadhi's version retains the sanctity of the original. The very strong rhythm section, EDM templates, Aadhi's lyrics, the brilliant Nadhaswaram solo in the interlude and subtle programming makes it a casual listen."- Behindwoods
"Aadhi signs off in style with a heady remix of yesteryear 'Inbam Pongum Vennila' with his signature rap verses. The song works big time because of the perfect mixture of lyrics from the classic song and layering it over thundering drums and Mridangam. An enjoyable and highly foot tapping track to end the unconventional OST."- Indiaglitz
"A hand- in- hand remake of yesteryear classic, Hiphop Tamizha nails this one in his trademark style. It's his first album and is already beginning to feel like the EDM part reigns the OST, on the whole." Onlykollywood

Superstar Rajinikanth's property to be auctioned

Tamil superstar Rajinikanth's wife's 1.5 acre property is coming up for auction.  A possession notice issued by the  public sector Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) in a major national daily said the bank had indeed taken possession of the said property in Padapai, Kancheepuram district, nearly 80 km from Chennai.

The notice says Latha Rajinikanth, the superstar's wife, had stood guarantor for a loan to Mediaone Global Entertainment Ltd, which was now worth Rs.22.21 crore along with the interest due on it.

"This amount is due as on July 17, 2014 together with further interest and liquidated damages as per contractual rates and other expenses/costs thereon with effect from July 18, 2014 till payment within 60 days from the date of receipt of the said notice.  The borrower in particular and the public in general are hereby cautioned not to deal with the property/asset and any dealings with the property/asset will be subject to charges of Exim Bank for the amount outstanding as per its security documents, with further interest, costs, expenses and charges thereon with payment," the notice said.

Film industry sources said this was adding to the woes of Rajinikanth especially after the drubbing of his new film Linga at the box office. "Linga is a commercial failure.  Already distributors have upped their ante and some of them have started demanding compensation from Rajinikanth. A few among them have indeed planned to picket the superstar's residence demanding compensation. After Rajinikanth compensated several distributors in a situation like this 10 years ago when his film Baba flopped, the distributors tasted blood.  Now they want the superstar to repeat the same.  But I don't think Rajinikanth will yield this time," says a producer on condition of anonymity.

Other said the mistake lay on both sides, Latha Rajinikanth and Exim Bank. "Latha Rajinikanth should had known her obligations and so was the bank and I think both failed in their fiduciary responsibilities," says Shyam Sekar, an independent financial analyst who knows a thing or two about the film industry's money flow.  He said the trouble is probably a follow-up to Rajinikanth's last film Kochadaiiyaan  which was to a large extent linked with Mediaone Global Entertainment Ltd. It may be recalled that this is the first time that properties belonging to Rajinikanth are going to be auctioned.

In his nearly four decades in the film industry, Rajinikanth has been running into rough weather with bad and, troublingly, consistent patches over the last three years and more.  Rajinikanth's serious ailments in 2011 also added ruptures to his career graph.  "In 2011, he fell seriously ill and was taken to Singapore Mount Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.  He was there for a few months. Though he acted in two films after that, he has not fully recovered yet," says an industry watcher. Two consecutive flops are posing a serious and strong question mark over the future of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth.

'Khamoshiyan' similar to 1949 film 'Mahal': Gurmeet Choudhary

'Khamoshiyan' similar to 1949 film 'Mahal': Gurmeet Choudhary
Mumbai: Television fame Gurmeet Choudhary, who recently stepped into Bollywood with a romantic flick ‘Khamoshiyan’, says that the film is almost similar to the 1949 hit film ‘Mahal’.

The hit suspense thriller ‘Mahal’ which casted Ashok Kumar and Madhubala in the lead roles became one of the box office hits of 1949.

“It is somewhat similar to the film ‘Mahal’,” Gurmeet said on Monday at FHM Bachelor of the Year Awards ceremony.

Not revealing much about the film ‘Khamoshiyan’, Gurmeet said, “It is a mix of many elements. But the film is very interesting where you will get a lot of stuff worth watching. It has beautiful songs, drama, suspense, everything…”

Also featuring Ali Fazal and Sapna Pabbi, the film ‘Khamosiyan’ is slated for Jan 30 release.

Alia Bhatt’, Sunny Leone, Kangana Ranaut: Top heroines at box office with powerful roles in Bollywood

In a year when money ruled the marquee with big stars opting for blockbusters, some remarkably content-driven women-centric movies made a big splash in Bollywood, among them Alia Bhatt, Sunny Leone, Kangana Ranaut…
Erotic-horror 'Ragini MMS 2' with Sunny Leone in the lead role was one of the most successful women-led horror films of the year spinning more than Rs 46 crore at the box office.
According to Google India's annual 'Year in Search' (YIS), Sunny Leone continued to be the most searched personality among the top searched people.

In a year when money ruled the marquee with big stars opting for blockbusters, some remarkably content-driven women-centric movies made a big splash in Bollywood, among them Alia Bhatt, Sunny Leone, Kangana Ranaut. Unlike the over-hyped star-studded films tailor-made to pull more audience to theatres, these films balanced their ‘masala’ quotient with good content.
2014 broke new grounds by giving heroines the required push to embrace scripts revolving around female protagonists.
Erotic-horror ‘Ragini MMS 2′ with Sunny Leone in the lead role was one of the most successful women-led horror films of the year spinning more than Rs 46 crore at the box office.
Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Highway’, a visual treat cataloguing the landscapes of Northern India, in the backdrop of a kidnap drama involving the young daughter of a rich man, who finds freedom in her captivity. This nuanced film, chronicling the inner journey and anguish of the captor and the hostage, turned out to be Alia Bhatt’s most mature performance till date.
In March came Vikas Bahl’s ‘Queen’, a heart-warming and disarming journey of a naive Rajouri girl Rani (played by Kangana Ranaut to perfection), who embarks on a solo honeymoon after being dumped by her fiance.
The film took the industry by surprise with its solidly-written role for Kangana, coupled with first-rate performances by Lisa Haydon and Rajkummar Rao.
‘Queen’, which premiered at Busan International Film festival, grossed Rs 61 crore at box office, a rare feat achieved by small-budget movie with a woman in the lead.
This was followed by Madhuri-Juhi Chawla starrer ‘Gulab Gang’ (released on March 8). The film revolved around an all-female vigilante group led by activist Sampat Pal in Bundelkhand (UP) but it was not exactly a box office success.
In August, came Rani Mukherjee starrer ‘Mardaani’ which broke into the male bastion touching on the ugly world of child trafficking.
Rani played a tough cop chasing a sex trade kingpin in the hard-hitting film, which was praised for its tight and compelling narrative. Her performance as a no-nonsense Mumbai crime branch officer lent strength to her character.
A month later, another film which celebrated woman power was Omung Kumar’s inspiring biopic on five-time female World Boxing champion Mary Kom with Priyanka Chopra in the lead.
Not only was Chopra’s powerhouse performance as the Olympic boxer appreciated by critics and audience alike, the film did a good job at the ticket windows too.
Vidya Balan-starrer ‘Bobby Jasoos’ did decent business at the box office. The film was praised for the sincerity of Balan’s performance as a naive but ambitious detective in the making in Hyderabad.
The year came to an end with much-talked about Sonam Kapoor-Fawad Khan starrer ‘Khoobsoorat’, which did decent business at the box office. In a role reversal of the sorts, Pakistani actor Fawad Khan emerged as the new eye candy with his female fans flocking to theatres for this romantic comedy.

"I became harsh on myself to prepare for 'Ugly',Christmas rave party busted in Gurgaon; 44 held,Salman Khan and Kabir dance together at 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' wrap-up party

Salman Khan and Kabir dance together at 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' wrap-up party

Mumbai: Salman Khan threw a big bash for the unit of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. The team recently wrapped up the second schedule of the film in Karjat. We bumped into some pictures of the late night bash on a social networking site.

The actor who is residing at ND Studios invited the crew to the adjoining lawn. Salman danced his heart out and even sang a few numbers keeping his crowd entertained. Salman’s co-stars were missing in action. While Kareena was in Mumbai bringing in Christmas with her family, Nawazuddin Siddiqui was shooting in Kolkata for another film.
The party went on till the wee hours of the morning and Salman dragged Director Kabir Khan to the dance floor. Kabir’s wife, Mini Mathur too gave them company at the grand party.

Salman being a great host that he is, made sure that everyone from the cast was in attendance. From the assistant directors to the people handling costumes, Salman made everyone comfortable.

Christmas rave party busted in Gurgaon; 44 held

Anti-narcotics sleuths and police have busted an alleged Christmas-eve rave party being held at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Delhi as 44 youngsters, including four girls, have been detained.

Officials from the Delhi zone of the Narcotics Control Bureau and Gurgaon police swooped down at the event location in Manesar between the intervening night of December 24-25 and have seized a variety of party drugs, stimulant narcotics and liquor bottles from the spot.

"The operation was conducted after getting specific intelligence that a rave party is being held here. We contacted Gurgaon police and the operation was conducted jointly," NCB Zonal Director (Delhi) Rohit Sharma told
The case has now being transferred to Mewat police authorities as it is their jurisdiction and blood samples of all those detained, including a 46-year-old Swiss national, are being taken, officials involved in the operation said.

"44 people, including four girls have been detained by the joint squad of NCB and Gurgaon police. Majority of those detained are in the age group of 20-26 years and they have been found to have been working in BPOs, even management companies and are also students in institutions in Delhi and NCR region," they said.

Sources said a tip-off was received by NCB about the rave party and the agency subsequently communicated it to Gurgaon Police Commissioner N S Virk after which raids were conducted at the farmhouse in the early and dark hours of Christmas.

Preliminary investigations have found that the invite for this illegal drugs abuse party was being circulated on social media platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp and an entry fee of Rs 1,000 was being charged by the organisers of the event.

A Whatsapp message intercepted by the NCB and police authorities and circulated by the alleged organisers read "Sonik Scizzor (Dark Prisma Records) Ritual Begins: 00:00 into the woods....Love and Party."

"One person suspected to be the organiser has been detained by the police and is being questioned," they said.

The party drugs that have been recovered from the spot include 'performance enhancing' narcotics like crystal meth, 'Charas', LSD, 'Hashish', 'Ganja' and fine quality Cocaine, abused widely in such parties.

Officials said the case has now been handed over to Mewat police as the incident occurred in their jurisdiction in village Bisar under Tauru police station area.

The agencies also found that liquor was being served at the venue without an excise permit for the same.

Further probe is on and exact charges will be pressed on those detained after the results of blood samples are obtained," they said.

"I became harsh on myself to prepare for 'Ugly'

Mumbai, Dec 25 Model-actor Rahul Bhat says he had to adapt a harsh lifestyle to prepare for his role of a struggler in Anurag Kashyap's 'Ugly'.

Rahul, who is returning to big screen after the gap of a decade post 'Nayee Padosan', said the drak and intense drama required honesty in performance.

"My role was very difficult because I have never been in such situation in life. For my role, I needed dark circles throughout.

Want Deepika Padukone to play my role in my biopic: Saina Nehwal,Kunal Kapoor shares his food philosophy

Kunal Kapoor shares his food philosophy

Kunal Kapoor shares his food philosophy

PUNJABI TADKA
I live to eat. My philosophy is eat, drink and be merry! And RIP that cruel diet! Being a Punjabi, our meals at home are full of ghee, butter and spices. But I prefer simple meals. I like home cooked food, especially my mother’s dal, rajma, bhindi (ladyfinger) and gajar ka halwa. Even today, we use only fresh, home-churned butter for cooking. I don’t like too many items on the table. It becomes hard for me to choose. I prefer dal, roti and one vegetable. In non-vegetarian food, I fancy fish and chicken. Mutton is not my cup of tea.

GUJARATI BITES
I enjoy Gujarati food. They add a touch of sweetness in every dish. My sister Reshma is married into a Gujarati household blessed with great cooks. That’s how I developed this taste. My favorites are Gujarati dal, aamras (mango juice), thepla and dhokla. My sister prepares crispy bhindi in a curd gravy garnished with spices.

RAJASTHANI FLAVOURS
Rajasthani food, despite being heavily loaded with ghee, is yummy. Dal batti, churma, gatte ka saag are such examples. When we were shooting for Rang De Basanti, we had camped in Jaipur and Jaisalmer. Chokhi Dhaani Resort is a joint in Jaipur, where guests are welcomed in traditional Rajasthani style. Tea is enjoyed in mud cups, while sitting on a charpoy. The fare served at Rambagh Palace is yummy.

SOUTH SWAAD

During my campus days, I was obsessed with dosas. I’d have it every day. Shiv Sagar or Amar Juice Centre in Juhu were my favourite haunts.

Want Deepika Padukone to play my role in my biopic: Saina Nehwal

Bhopal, Dec 23: Ace shuttler and Olympic Bronze medallist Saina Nehwal today said that she won't mind a biopic made on her life and wants it to highlight the sport of badminton rather than focus on her. Saina, who won three titles this year including the recently won China Open, said that if a film or a documentary is made on her then it should promote badminton. Want Deepika to play my role: Saina File photo of Saina Nehwal "I think people are already aware of whatever is going on in my life. If a movie comes it should be like sports. It should promote badminton and not me," bronze-medal winner in 2012 London Games, Saina, who was in the city to receive a cash reward of 50 lakh Rupees by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in an awards function, said. "So far, films like 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' and 'Mary Kom' have been made. But badminton is a technique game and for making a film on it one has to learn its techniques also," she added. Asked who would she like to play the protagonist's role, she said, "Actress Deepika Padukone is fit to play her role as she is also a good badminton player," adding, she would also like to see superstar Shah Rukh Khan as the hero in the film. Saina also predicted that India may get two medals in Rio Olympics to be held in 2016. "PV Sindhu is playing good and in the coming Olympic (Rio-2016) India's Women players may get two medals," Saina added. Want Deepika to play my role: Saina Deepika with tennis superstar Roger Federer recently Responding to a question regarding her decision to be coached by Vimal Kumar instead of Pullela Gopichand, she said, "It was an urgent requirement as Gopi Chand (her former coach) was unable to spare much time for me and I am unable to perform well also. My new coach, Vimal Kumar is giving me lot of time and my performance too has improved." Saina said that she was not facing much problem in shuttling between Hyderabad and Bangalore as she was aware that for taking training with Vimal Kumar she has to travel to Karnataka's capital. "I have taken this decision after weighing all the pros and cons," she added. To another query, she said that at present she is focused on international events as there is a lot of time left for the Rio Olympics. Referring to top seed Chinese player Li Xuerui, and others Shixian Wang and Wang Yihan, Saina said, "They are challenge for her. At present nobody is in a position to challenge them, but my record against them has improved a lot. I have defeated Chinese players number of times recently."

The leggy lass will be holidaying with her near ones for the next two weeks.
Mumbai: Deepika Padukone has finally taken a break from her hectic schedule to ring in Christmas and New Year in a grand way. The leggy lass was spotted at Maldives with her near ones. Allegedly she would be vacationing at the exotic island for the next two weeks.
Reportedly she will be staying at Cheval Blanc Randheli resort in Noonu Atoll. It looks like Maldives is her favourite destination as she traveled to the same place last year too.

It was just a while ago, we saw Deepika and Ranveer cozying up at the AIB Knockout event. Though the duo has been tight-lipped about their relationship, they have shown no qualms in flaunting the status otherwise. Ranveer is known to drop in between shoot schedules to spend some quality time with his lady love. We wonder if Ranveer will join her to bring in the New Year.

Odd, curious, heartwarming: What Bollywood tweeted in 2014

Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan in Hum Aapke Hai Koun!
From odd to heartwarming, the best of Twitter conversations in 2014.

From Supreme Court allowing women to work as make-up artists in Bollywood to Mallika Sherawat talking about women's rights at Oxford University, 2014 on Twitter was a mixed bag of conversations that ranged from odd and heartwarming to plain curious.

Here's a look at the top ten Twitter moments of 2014.

20 years of Hum Aapke Hain Koun!

It was the year of many a filmi milestones.

While Yash Raj Films' Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) completed 1000 weeks earlier this month, 1994 blockbuster film Hum Aapke Hain Koun completed 20 years on August 5.
Madhuri Dixit, who played the female lead in HAHK, wrote: 'Wah wah Soorajji, picture kya banayee! Rajshri aur parivaar ko badhai hobadhai. Unforgettable memories.'

Supreme Court lifts ban on female make-up artists
In a landmark decision earlier this year, the Supreme Court allowed women to work as make-up artists in the Indian film industry.

Earlier, Cine Costume Make-up Artists and Hair Dressers Association (CCMAA) mandate dictated that women could only be hair dressers and not make-up artists.
Film producer Ashvini Yardi welcomed the news and wrote: "Kudos to Charu Khurana for challenging and getting the ban lifted on female makeup artists in Bollywood."

Shah Rukh Khan: My mom would have been so proud
The year was also replete with accolades and awards for Happy New Year star Shah Rukh Khan.
When the 48-year-old actor was conferred with top French civilian award -- Knight of the Legion of Honour -- in July, he remembered his mother and wrote: 'Thank u France & His Excellency President Hollande & Mr. Laurent (fabulous) Fabius for the honour. Thx my India. Mommy would have been so proud. & the Indian Film Industry, Thanx for taking a nobody & making his dreams come true.'
Shah Rukh was also presented with the Global Diversity Award 2014 by Speaker of Britain's House of Commons, the Rt Hon John Bercow at a special ceremony held in the House of Commons.
When Aamir Khan met The Terminator
Aamir Khan and Arnold Schwazenegger

Aamir Khan may not have acted in a Hollywood film (yet) but he is an international star in his own right.

When Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger was in India, he got to know that Khan wanted to meet him and paid him a visit.

Aamir shared a picture of them together and tweeted: 'I told the HT staff I wish I could meet him. So they told him. And he just walked in to my room!!! He's really cool. Very warm and friendly. It was a bizzare feeling! I looked up when the door opened and I see THE TERMINATOR walking into my room!'

Arnold also praised Aamir and wrote: 'It was fantastic to meet you! You’re a real star, w/ success at the box office and all the awards.'

Shabana Azmi: Nawaz Sharif is a fan of Laga Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi

Nawaz Sharif and Shabana Azmi

Politics may divide people but art unites.

When actress Shabana Azmi met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at a private tea party during his visit to India in May, she took to Twitter to reveal that he is a big fan of Indian legends like singers Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi and her poet father Kaifi Azmi.
She shared a picture of them together and wrote: 'Met Nawaz Sharif yesterday. Delighted dat he is fan of Kaifi Sb Lataji Mohd Rafi.I said we nd Indo Pak coproductions. Nawaz Sharif said he gives his full support 4 films as coproductions between India Pakistan. He brings msg of Peace n encourages exchanges.'

Gulzar receives Dada Saheb Phalke award

He may not have been honoured with Bharat Ratna yet, but Gulzar is certainly one of the most celebrated writers in India.

The veteran lyricist-filmmaker was conferred with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award earlier this year.

National Award-winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar wrote: 'As one of his biggest fans, am simply overjoyed to know that Gulzar Saab has been conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke award! Take a bow, Sir!!'

When Bipasha Basu lashed out at Humshakals team

It isn't often that an actress leaves film promotions mid-way.

But Bipasha Basu couldn't help herself after she dubbed for Sajid Khan's sex-comedy Humshakals.

She turned to Twitter to explain her side of the story and wrote: 'This is to put an end to all the discussions around my absence for Humshakals promotions. I take full responsibility of getting into a film only on the basis of trust. But after dubbing for my character in the film, as I had professionally committed to do so I'm extremely disturbed by the end result of the same. In these circumstances I didn't know how to promote a film with all honesty and that's why I thought it was better to stay away. I am confident that the film will be true to it's genre and will be a full entertainer because of the people involved. I wish fox star studios who I have had my biggest hit with Raaz 3 and vashu ji who is a fantastic producer all the best. Wish all my co stars Saif, Riteish, Tamannah, Esha and the technicians best of luck. Sometimes, certain journeys cannot be completed and this is one of them - no one to be blamed, combination of things that made me disrupt my journey.'

Following the fiasco, Bipasha and Sajid have decided to never work with each other again.

It was a proud moment for many Indians when Bollywood star Farhan Akhtar was appointed as the South Asia Goodwill Ambassador of the UN Women.

Expressing gratitude, Farhan wrote: 'It is with your support that I've had the energy to stay on this path.'
Farhan also heads Men Against Rape and Discrimination (MARD) campaign, which advocates gender equality and women's empowerment.

Expressing her excitement, she shared a picture of her and tweeted: 'At the historic Oxford university, what a journey, Haryana to Oxford.'

Onlookers at the ghats reportedly sang Bhojpuri songs to get Deepika and Irrfan's attention, who were shooting for Shoojit Sircar's Piku

Bollywood stars Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan, who were shooting Shoojit Sircar's Piku in Varanasi earlier this week, were in for a 'treat' from local fans.

Even though filming was organized with maximum secrecy, a large chunk of the local population got wind of the shoot and arrived to watch Deepika and Irrfan at work on the famous ghats. The crew also had some interesting moments as some enthusiastic onlookers on a boat reportedly, sang Bhojpuri songs from across the river to get the attention of the actors.

Despite repeated attempts by fans to engage with Deepika and Irrfan, the local police ensured a smooth shoot by making rounds of the river.

Deepika, dressed in an all-black outfit and checked shawl, was seen sitting on the stairs of the ghat, engaged in a conversation with Irrfan Khan.

The actors braved the bone-chilling winter weather of the ghats to shoot for the film, which also features megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

Deepika and Irrfan reportedly looked particularly impressed with the beauty and serenity of the ghats.

Parts of the film were also shot in Kolkata, where Big B was seen cycling through though the streets of the city, visiting iconic landmarks like the Howrah Bridge and Victoria Memorial.

Mr Bachchan has reportedly completed all his scenes and therefore was not required for the Varanasi shoot.

Piku will release on April 30, 2015.
