Want to inspire future actresses to take risks: Priyanka

New Delhi: Fresh from the success of 'MaryKom', Priyanka Chopra says it is her goal to do more meaningful films and inspire future actresses to take up challenging roles in Bollywood. Priyanka feels actresses are afraid to take risks because of the fear of failure but according to the star success can be achieved by striking a balance between commercial cinema and substantial content.

"Actresses are scared to take risks. They think they will fail and might not get good work after that. It is possible that they may fail but they should start taking up prominent roles. "I have always done strong and prominent characters be it in 'Fashion', 'Aitraaz' or 'Mary Kom'. The bigger question for me is that people should be able to see that female actors can do roles of responsibility. The world should start seeing female and male actors as equals. This is my goal," Priyanka

She was elated that 'Mary Kom' got a good opening and feels this might pave way for filmmakers to trust actresses. "It is a victory that we got good weekend numbers. With such films getting good opening numbers, it will be a big step for future female actresses. "They will start taking up films where at least they are shown at par with the boys. This will hopefully encourage producers to cast actresses in prominent roles," she says.

Upbeat about her maiden production 'Madamji', her second collaboration with director Madhur Bhandarkar after 'Fashion', Priyanka says it is an extremely powerful and entertaining movie.
"I am really excited for the film because it a story about an item girl thrown into the world of politics. It has all kinds of shades and I am really kicked about the story," the actress says.

Priyanka wants to promote new talent though her company Purple Pebble Pictures. "I want to give chance to new talent through my production house, be it new directors and actors. All films in
my production house will not necessarily feature me. We will make movies with other actors too." When asked if she would like to cast her younger cousin Mannara in any film of her production house, Priyanka said, "I would love to cast her in one of my films and I hope she likes some script. But I will not make films according to actors but on the basis of scripts."

Would love to work with a female Indian director: Freida Pinto

New Delhi: Freida Pinto always wanted to be a global citizen and after making a place for herself in Hollywood, the Indian actress is keen to star in a Bollywood movie.
Frieda Pinto
The actress, who shot to international fame with her role in Danny Boyle-directed Oscar-winning saga 'Slumdog Millionaire', says there have been opportunities in the past but things somehow did not work out. She is also keen to collaborate with a female director in Bollywood.

"I want to work in Bollywood. I never said that I am not interested in working in Indian film industry. "I would love to work with a female Indian director.

There were times when I liked the scripts but as I had already committed to other films in Hollywood, I could not do. At other times the roles were not exciting or strong enough for me to take up," said Freida.

The actress, 30, says Hollywood was always on her mind and feels proud of herself that she overcame all limitations and realised her dream of working outside India.

"I always wanted to be a global citizen. I knew I had to pack my bags go out and establish myself at the global platform. That was my dream. I could do that because I had the right education. I have transcended all the possible limitations. I hope my story can inspire other girls," she said.

Freida, born and brought up in Mumbai, says she is grateful to her roots for keeping her strong in the foreign land.

"India has taught me a lot; it is something about this country, be the people or the hardships we face but it teaches you great lessons. I don't get shocked when I see poverty in any country because I have seen it in my own country. India has made me value relationships."

Freida says she is always conscious about presenting herself as a universal actress as she does not want be stereotyped on the basis of her origin.

"When I go to a filmmaker in Hollywood I don't present myself as someone who has come from some other country but I go there as an actress. When I choose a role, I look at it from the perspective of content rather than the fact that I am Indian and I should do specific kind of roles. When it comes to work, I just think like an actor," Frieda added.

The 'You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger' star feels Hollywood is more open today to various ethnicities. "Stereotyping of Indian actors has reduced a lot there. It is much easier now but had I entered 10 years back it would have been difficult getting good work there," she said.

Badlapur poster out: Rugged and forceful Varun Dhawan looks anguish (see pics)

New Delhi: Just two days before the teaser poster of Varun Dhawan’s upcoming movie ‘Badlapur’ was released, the poster revealed the dark premise of the movie.
Yesterday the first look of the young actor in the movie is revealed and we must admit, Varun nails the rugged, tough look.
The actor plays the role of Raghu in the movie. The poster shows an angry young Varun, and he is totally in to it.
Varun tweeted, “EXCLUSIVE- #Badlapur #Raghu first look. All is fair in revenge #badlapurteaserdec2nd.Are you ready India? it begins!!”
So far Varun Dhawan has played the quintessential romantic hero on the big screen. In the new poster, the B-town hunk is seen in a completely different avatar, which we think no one would have anticipated.
There is some strikingly eerie about the first look of Sriram Raghavan's new film 'Badlapur.

Touted as a revenge drama, the movie has a novel star cast comprising Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Yami Gautam, Divya Dutta, Vinay Pathak along with Varun.
The movie is also considered to be quite bold in content as Divya Dutta and Varun Dhawan will share a passionate kiss.

This is the second poster released. The first poster showed a solitary railway station at night, from the top. The name of the film ‘Badalpur’ is seen inscribed between two rail tracks.
The red colour of the film name contrasts perfectly with the dark bluish hue of the entire poster. Two persons are shown standing on two different railway platforms, facing each other.
Though the faces of the two men are not clear, it only adds to the enigma.

Going by Varun’s avatar we think Badlapur is going to be the game changer for the young lad.
Starring Varun, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi,  Yami Gautam, Divya Dutta and Radhika Apte, Badlapur directed by Sriram Raghavan is slated to release on February 20, 2015.

Movie Review: Zed Plus,Review: Ungli begins with a bang and that's about it!

Review: Ungli begins with a bang and that's about it!

Emraan Hashmi and Shraddha Kapoor in Ungli
Much as you try to like this film, you end up feeling sad as the Ungli turns limp, says Prasanna D Zore.

Director Rensil D’Silva and dialogue writer Milap Zaveri team up to dish out an inane thriller that lacks originality as well as a solid plot.
Ungli is about four friends -- Abhay (Randeep Hooda), Maya (Kangna Ranaut), Kaleem (Angad Bedi) and Gautam alias Goti (Neil Bhoopalam) -- and their brave attempt to clean the system of corruption in their unique vigilante style.
The friends are united by a tragedy that befalls their friend Rajeev (Arunoday Singh).
That makes them wear masks, roam the streets of Mumbai at night, kidnap corrupt officials in a van, video tape their acts of wrongdoing and send the tapes to news channels to expose the system and change it for the larger good.
In the process, they become known as the Ungli gang.
D’Silva does try to inject a sense of thrill by introducing Sanjay Dutt as ACP Ashok Kale (who his immediate superior calls ‘Kali’; what an effort to convey that the superior doesn’t know the local dialect!), who in turn seeks help from Nikhil Abhyankar (Emraan Hashmi) to arrest the Ungli gang because Abhyankar is one of those cops who thinks like a criminal.
But that’s about it.
The plot turns flaccid, banal and as straight as your ungli once Abhyankar infiltrates the gang.
One expects a cat-and-mouse game to follow this development, some twists and turns to make you reach the edge of your seat, but you end up feeling disappointed.
The gang sets about to clean the system and does it without any hiccups.
One must make special mention of Zaveri’s dialogues. Nobody can beat this hilarious ‘Aansoo-on se sirf whiskey dilute hoti hai’ as Abhyankar sets about encouraging Kale to take the fight against corruption to its logical end.
Of the cast, only Randeep Hooda shows some guts and style in essaying the role of a crime reporter-turned-system-cleaner but his ungli (I mean effort) falls flat as they go about exposing corrupt pension officials, traffic police and the wheeler-dealers who broker police transfers for a fee.
There is not much to comment on Neha Dhupia’s role as a television anchor-cum reporter who first takes the initiative to scoop the details about the Ungli gang and later whimpers that her boss yells at her because she has failed to make any inroads. So much for characterisation!
The worst part of Ungli is the way the climax unfolds.
The vigilantes go about exposing the Dayals -- Mahesh Manjrekar and his son Rajat Kaul -- without the latter doing any ungli to repulse the four friends. The scene just begins and ends in a blink-and-you-miss moment!
Ungli begins with a bang and that’s about it!

Director: Chandra Prakash Dwivedi
Cast: Adil Hussain, Mona Singh, Mukesh Tiwari, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Sanjay Mishra and K K Raina

Comedy is hard, satire is harder. To make a film that not only tickles your funny bone but also makes you take a long look at the state of Bharat is a rarity. Kudos to director Chandra Prakash Dwivedi for attempting that. I said Bharat and not India because we actually have two countries residing in one. India – exemplified by the shiny glass and metal towers sprouting in the metros and Bharat -- the small town and villages that have yet to receive the trickledown effect of the so-called vibrant economy. Where the common man speaks in a language that is far different from the Oxbridge accents heard in the corridors of power.

The real tragedy of this Bharat is that those in power haven’t bothered to learn its ground reality. There is a communication gap so wide you can park the whole Grand Canyon in it and still have place for more. This point is emphatically brought to light through this satire.

A common ‘puncturewala’ (Adil Hussain) gets to meet the kind-hearted but clueless PM (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), who misinterprets his complaint against a nosy neighbour (Mukesh Tiwari) as a plea for help against the Pakis. In a fit of philanthropy, the PM orders that the lowly villager be given zed plus security. What follows is a set of misadventures that puncture the socio-political reality of our country.

You are in for a treat if you forgive this rather silly premise. Writers Ramkumar Singh and Chandra Prakash Dwivedi have created a vivid picture of a vibrant village society, where everyone knows each other inside out.  The film was shot entirely on location in Mandawa, a heritage village near Jaipur and hence the milieu feels authentic. The look of the actors too is real and not the uber villager get up that we see in big budget masala entertainers. The dialogue hit home with their earthy humour. It was nice to hear idioms after a long, long time in films.

Acting too is spot on. Adil Hussain charms as the humble mechanic, bedazzled by circumstances. Mona Singh is apt as his stoic wife, Mukesh Tiwari clicks as his more well-to-do neighbour and KK Raina excels as the prime minister’s personal secretary who doesn’t care for the democracy and is only interested in increasing his master’s political reach.

Our politicians refuse to see people and situations for what they are but callously use them as means to achieve political ends. The strength of the film lies in bringing home this rather grim truth in a light-hearted vein. The laughs don’t come through toilet humour or through slapstick but are driven by situations that seem plausible. This fact alone makes it a paisa vasool film.

Sonakshi rebuffs dating rumours with 'Tevar' co-star Arjun Kapoor

Sonakshi rebuffs dating rumours with 'Tevar' co-star Arjun Kapoor

Mumbai: Actress Sonakshi Sinha, who has been linked romantically to her "Tevar" co-star Arjun Kapoor, says if they work together and watch films together, it doesn't mean they're in a relationship.

Responding to the dating rumours, Sonakshi said: "I don't react to these rumours. You should ask people who write about it. If we work together and if we watch a film together, it doesn't mean you are in a relationship."

Meanwhile, the actress is also happy that she got an opportunity to share screen space with megastar Rajinikanth in southern film "Lingaa".

Talking about the film, she said: "This film is in two parts -- one is present day and the other one is set in 1940. The story is well written and more than a romantic interest, my character is a supporter who encourages him (Rajinikanth). So it was easier for me. I am extremely happy to work with Rajini sir."

When I decide to do a film, I will celebrate it with you: Karisma tells reporters

Karisma Kapoor looked lovely in a cream and pink traditional wear at the launch of a jewellery line in Mumbai today. The light eyed actress spoke to reporters at the event.
When asked about her acting plans, Karisma said that she was too busy with her kids, at the moment. She said, "When the time is right and I feel like it, then I will do a movie again. I have always worked honestly. Now my kids are young and I want to devote time to them. I do work and I'll continue to do that. But regarding a movie when I do decide to do one, everyone will come to know. I'll celebrate the occasion with all of you out here. "
Karisma last acted in Dangerous Ishhq in the year 2012, which did not fare well at the box office. However, the actress is currently busy with endorsements and other projects.

Why is the 'Shandaar' couple down in the dumps?

We know that the 'Shandaar' couple Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor were shooting for their Vikas Bahl movie in Poland. Though the shoot went smoothly and the team completed a productive schedule abroad, it seems that the hectic work and bad weather took a toll on the lead actors' health.
Alia and Shahid, who are both so glad to be back home in Mumbai, are down with a bout of flu. Shahid had tweeted just before leaving for Mumbai, "Last day of shoot here in Poland recovering from a horrible bout of flu and insomnia keeping me up. Can't wait to be back home feeling rather homesick .... love to all. "
Alia on the other hand gave her family a fright. Down with fever and a terrible stomach upset, Alia was feared to have come down with Appendicitis. However, after a series of tests, her dad confirmed to Mumbai Mirror that it was just a case of hyper acidity. He said, "Alia is feeling better. There is no cause for worry. All tests are clear. It was just fever and hyper acidity. Appendicitis has been ruled out."
Well, wish them both a speedy recover!
